Altitude Safety and Hydration on Cedar Mountain

With Cedar City sitting at an elevation of 5,800 feet—and trails on nearby Cedar Mountain reaching well above 9,000 feet—proper hydration and altitude precautions are essential for late-summer outdoor recreation.

Actionable Health Guidance for High Elevation:

  1. Increase Fluid Consumption: Due to lower humidity and higher respiratory moisture loss at elevation, drink water prior to beginning physical activity rather than waiting for thirst onset.

  2. Electrolyte Maintenance: For physical exertion lasting longer than 60 minutes, plain water should be supplemented with electrolytes containing sodium and potassium.

  3. UV Radiation Protection: Ultraviolet light intensity increases by approximately 4% for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen should be applied regardless of cloud cover.
